Joseph Conrad's Victory revolving around a thought provoking character, Axel Heyst, who after his father' s death resolve to lead a life free of commitment, refusing to take roots in any specific place, shows us a very pessimistic and tragic universe. The novel points out to the reader the insignificance of individual lives within the context of the wider universe. The father's last advice to his son to enable him to avoid pain being:"look on make no sound", Heyst decides to travel and not to form any attachment, saying early in the novel:"He who forms a tie is lost". Conrad in his Victory creates a rich field for psychological and philosophical exploration of scepticism, by introducig a son who had been implanted in him a "profound mistrust in life"
